Our Karate

Our Karate - Kata

In addition to fighting moves we also have Kata. Kata is a series of movements preformed in a set sequence. Kata has been in martial arts for hundreds of years. Our Kata are based on Kata older than Karate itself. Kata is a living time capsule of movements passes down over the generations.

What is “SHOTOKAN”

The Karate we do is based on “Shotokan” devised by Gichin Funakoshi. Funakoshi was a Poet and had his philosophical writings on display in his training hall (located in Toshima Ward, Japan).

Because of this the hall was called the “Shotokan” by his students.

“Shoto” was Funakoshi’s pen-name. “Kan” means hall

Safe Fighting Exercises

At Tiger Spirit we do non-contact and light contact training. unlike other non-contact schools our emphasis is on positioning for maximum impact and not completing full techniques when attracting a training partner. Rather than completing a technique and missing, we STOP before impact
